Book of Shadows

Book of Shadows AKA: Grimoire is a diary in which a Witch records his or her personal spells, invocations, rituals, dreams, recipes for various potions, and so forth. Some traditions say it must be hand-written, others say it does not matter. A Book of Shadows may be kept by an individual witch or by an entire coven.

In the event of a Witch's death, the Book of shadows may be passed down to his or her children or grandchildren, kept by a High Priestess & High Priest of the Coven (if the witch was a member of one at the time of her death), or burned in order to protect the secrets of the Craft.

Whichever course of action is taken, of course, depends entirely upon the customs of the particular Wiccan tradition and/or the Witch's own personal wishes.

A Magickal journal kept by each Wiccan initiate, in which spells, invocations, ritual notes, herbal recipes, dreams, divination results and material from the coven book can be recorded. Some people write in Thesbian script or in other alphabets.

Sew into the cover of the Book leaves of the sacred herbs vervain, rue, bay, willow or others, if you wish. They should be well dried & secretly placed by the light of the moon. The covers of the Book of shadows should of course, be covered with cloth.

Despite its romantic name, a Book of Shadows is simply a record of Wicca beliefs and practices. Covens may have their own books outlining how they worship, which they usually don't share with people outside the coven. A solitary witch, however, has the freedom to create her own. Even members of a coven may want to create some parts to fill in gaps or expand on their practices and beliefs.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every Witch makes his or her own Book of Shadows. A Book of Shadows is your personal magick diary, with notes on what rituals and magick you performed, when you performed it, what you did, what kind of results you got, any feelings you have about your magick, your life, or anything else that you feel is important to record about your experiences as a Witch. These notes help you to better understand both yourself and your magick. You can use any blank pages book (check stationary stores for books with both lined and unlined blank pages and many different kinds of covers) or you can learn how to make your own paper and how to bind it into a book or you can just use ordinary notebook paper and any binder of your choice.

The plural of Book of Shadows (when talking about more than one of them) is Books of Shadows (not Book of Shadowses). Book of Shadows is often abbreviated as B.O.S.

You will usually want to be able to easily add pages anywhere in your Book of Shadows or even move pages around. This means some kind of loose leaf binding, usually a two or three hole notebook. Some Witches prefer bound books, which means that once something is put in, that’s the order it is in, and it can't ever be changed. If you use a regular two hole or three hole notebook, you can also get plastic binder pages to insert special items that you don’t want to hole punch. Some Witches keep daily Books of Shadows in loose leaf notebooks, and once a year (or whenever makes sense) transfer the most important information into beautiful bound books (some even learn bookmaking and make their own books).

You may want to consider what will happen if your Book of Shadows falls into the wrong hands (angry parents, troublesome siblings, cranky teachers, etc.) and store or keep your Book of Shadows appropriately. You may want to include personal identification information (name, address, phone number, e-mail, etc.) in case your Book of Shadows gets lost.

Several people have written in and asked about sharing Books of Shadows. It is acceptable to share when you feel comfortable. Normally parts of your Book of Shadows will be very personal and won’t be shared and other parts will be things you might share with other Witches. Never let anyone else pressure you into sharing something you don’t want to share and never try to make someone else share something if they feel uncomfortable sharing.

Some Witches keep their Book of Shadows on a computer. It is much better if you keep a real Book of Shadows. The process of actually writing something down or drawing something out helps make it more concrete. You will be much happier in the long run with actual books. Plus, once you learn how to make magick inks, you can use magick inks for writing in your Book of Shadows.

Things to include in your Book of Shadows: You decide what you want to include. You can leave things from this list out if you don’t feel like including them. You can add other things that aren't on this list if you feel like including them. It is your personal Book of Shadows — make it your own!

Title Page
Include your name, contact information, and the dates you start and end that Book of Shadows. If you end up keeping different Books of Shadows for different subjects, then label the subject too.

Dedication Page
Write down your spiritual commitment. Things like why you are practicing Witchcraft, what you hope to learn, how you hope to grow, that kind of thing. If you want to dedicate your book to a particular God, Goddess, or more than one, write that down and why. Include the date and whatever astrological information you know. Over time, you may find that you want to change your dedication. That’s cool. In that case, add a new dedication page and keep the old one — you will want a record of how you have changed and grown in your craft. Don’t be embarrassed by old dedications — that’s a record of how you grew in the craft. Some Witches add a new dedication once a year, four times a year, or even at each Sabbat.

Invocation of the Goddess
This is an invocation of your Goddess. You can have more than one Goddess (or not even have one yet). You can start by including the famous Charge of the Goddess from Leland’s Aradia or you can make up your own. Feel free to add additional invocations of the Goddess to various Goddesses as you discover them or make up your own.

Invocation of the God
This is an invocation of your God (and this can be Jesus, if you are a Christian Witch). You can have more than one God (or not even have one yet). Feel free to add additional invocations of the God to various Gods as you discover them or make up your own.

Altar Diagrams
You may include diagrams, drawings, even photographs, of altars that you plan or make. Include any notes that you feel are important. See also the article on altars. http://www.teenwitch.com/magick/altar.html

Circle
Write down how you call or cast your circle. Include any chants or poems you recite or make up. Include any notes about anything special you do. Save old versions. You may start with the version at casting a circle. http://www.teenwitch.com/magick/castingcircle.html

Rituals
Keep notes on all the rituals you try. Write down what you did and how it turned out. You can also include rituals you are saving for later (so they are handy when it is time).

Lunar
Keep notes on your Esbats (Full Moon and New Moon), as well as any other lunar rituals (dark moon, waxing moon, waning moon, quarter moons, etc.). You can also include notes for lunar things you might want to do in the future.

Drawing Down the Moon
If you do a Drawing Down the Moon ritual on Full Moon, keep notes on what you did, any visions or inspirations, and how things turned out.

Sabbats
Keep records of what you do for each of the eight Sabbats in the Wheel of the Year. You may also want to save ideas for upcoming Sabbats (rituals, recipes, crafts, decorations, incenses, potions, spells, etc.).

Holy Days
If you celebrate any holy days other than the Esbats and Sabbats, you will probably want to keep records of those. And you may want to save information on holy days you learn about in case you ever want to celebrate them in the future.

Other Special Days
Keep records of any other special days, including your own birthday, and the birthdays of friends and families, anniversaries, and any other days that are special to you.

Magickal Calendar
If the sections on Esbats, Sabbats, Holy Days, lunar cycles and other special days becomes large enough, you may want to consider keeping a separate Magickal Calendar book.

Recipes
Some Witches keep their recipes in their magickal information section. Others have a separate section for recipes. It’s really a matter of personal preference.

Magickal Diary
Some Witches keep their magickal diary at the back of their Book of Shadows. Some Witches keep their Magickal Diary in a separate book. It is a matter of personal preference. Some Witches even keep a separate detailed Magickal Diary, but include duplicates or summaries of the most important notes in the appropriate pages of their Book of Shadows. Your Magickal Diary records all the divination you do (astrology, Tarot, I Ching, Drawing Down the Moon, etc.), all the spells you perform (with the results), all of the rituals you perform, and anything else you do in your magickal life. You will also want to record dreams and visions. And you will want to keep notes on how you feel, how your life is going, what your plans and hopes and dreams are, and anything else that you feel is important about your life or your magick.

Cartomancy (Reading with Playing Cards)

How To Read A Regular Deck Of Playing Cards As Tarot Cards

Before we get started with today's blog post, at the end of this blog are helpful links where I got some of this information from and even a video. So, let's get started...

If you can't afford tarot cards or you have parents that are religious, then this blog post is perfect for you.

Cartomancy is known as Gypsy playing cards (fortune-telling). Gypsy's would use a regular deck of playing cards as tarot cards and they would use this as a form of divination.

Forms of cartomancy appeared soon after playing cards were first introduced into Europe in the 14th century. Practitioners of cartomancy are generally known as cartomancers, card readers, or simply readers.

Cartomancy is one of the oldest of the more common forms of fortune-telling. In English-speaking countries the most common form of cartomancy is generally tarot card reading. Tarot cards are almost exclusively used for this purpose in these places.

Cartomancy using standard playing cards was the most popular form of providing fortune-telling card readings in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

In English-speaking countries, Tarot cards are more commonly used, however, a standard deck of Anglo-American bridge/poker playing cards (i.e., 52-card, four-suit set) can also be used; the deck is often augmented with jokers, and even with the blank card found in many packaged decks.

In France, the 32-card piquet playing-card deck is most typically used in cartomancy readings, although, the 52 card deck can also be used. (A piquet deck can be a 52-card deck with all of the 2's through the 6's removed. This leaves all of the 7's through the 10's, the face cards, and the aces.)

NOTE:
There are no major Arcana cards in this deck. They were invented in the 15th century. However, they only began to emerge in the 18th century. In the major Arcana cards, Strength is traditionally the 11th card and Justice is the 8th card. However, the influential Ryder-Waite-Smith deck switched the position of these cards in order to make them a better fit with the astrological correspondences worked out by the Hermetic-Order of The Golden Dawn, under which the 8th card is associated with Leo and the 11th card is associated with Libra. Today, many decks use this numbering particularly in the English-Speaking world. Both placements are considered valid.

Methods:
The most popular method of cartomancy using a standard playing deck is referred to as the Wheel of Fortune. Here, the reader removes cards at random and assigns significance to them based on the order they were chose. Though the interpretation of various cards varies by region, the common significators for the future are as follows:

Most Common Interpretations in Cartomancy
CardSignificance
King of HeartsA man over 35, with sandy, dark blond, or light brown hair, with brown, blue or hazel eyes. Usually a family member or other loved one. Paternal and family-oriented.  [Fair-haired young man. Auburn or Grey Hair with Hazel or Green Eyes.]
King of DiamondsA man over 35, with red or light blond hair with blue, green or gray eyes, Usually a wealthy man in an authority position.  [Fair or grey-haired man over 40. Fair to Red or Gold Hair and Blue or Grey Eyes.]
King of ClubsA man over 35, with medium or dark brown hair, with brown, blue or hazel eyes. Usually a married business man (although business could have a sexual, rather than commercial, interpretation.)  [Dark-haired young man. Brown Hair and Light Brown Eyes.]
King of SpadesA man over 35, with dark brown to black hair, and dark brown eyes. Usually a widower or divorced man, or a man from a foreign country. Ambitious and powerful, can be arrogant and deceptive.  [Dark-haired man over 40. Dark Hair and Eyes, Dark Complexion.]
Queen of HeartsA woman over 18, with sandy, dark blond, or light brown hair, with brown, blue or hazel eyes. Usually a family member or other loved one. Maternal and family-oriented.  [Fair-haired young woman. Auburn or Grey Hair with Hazel or Green Eyes.]
Queen of DiamondsA woman over 18, with red or light blond hair with blue, green or gray eyes, Usually a wealthy woman in an authority position.  [Fair or grey haired woman over 40. Fair to Red or Gold Hair and Blue or Grey Eyes.]

Queen of SpadesA woman over 18, with dark brown to black hair, and dark brown eyes. Usually a widow or divorced woman, or a woman from a foreign country. Ambitious and intelligent, can be cold, calculating, or spiteful.  [Dark-haired woman over 40. Dark Hair and Eyes, Dark Complexion.]

Again, reading playing cards is known as cartomancy.

Did you realize that each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king from history? Spades = King David; Clubs = Alexander the Great; Hearts = Charlemagne; and Diamonds = Julius Caesar.

Reading with playing cards is easy because the tarot layouts and divinatory meanings are easy to adapt to reading regular playing cards. Clubs = Wands, Hearts = Cups, Diamonds = Coins, and Spades = Swords. To do a reading, simply shuffle and cut in your usual method, and deal the spread of your choice.

Here is one method:
Begin by separating the Kings or the Queens from the deck. Lay them side by side in this order: Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, and Spades. Assign a name of someone you are involved with or interested in to each card. You can choose Unknown for the leftover cards. Put the cards back in the deck, shuffle, and ask a question.

Deal out the remaining cards face up, laying them out one at a time. Proceed across four stacks and return to the beginning if required. Your question is answered when you deal a matching suit on one of the Kings or Queens.

Ask another question and start laying down cards from the beginning of the row again, stopping again when a suit matches a King or Queen. After all of the cards have been dealt, pick up each stack and count the number of cards of each suit. Hearts denote love, clubs indicate vitality and liveliness, diamonds indicate money, and spades show contemplation and thought. The more you have of one suit indicates the predominant influence or the potential of that relationship. Look up the meanings of the cards on the reference chart for a deeper understanding.

Playing "The Card Game" Paranormal Game

Playing "The Card Game" Paranormal Game

The Card Game is a paranormal ritual that is used to contact the spirits of the dead.

The Card Game can be played with any number of people. You will need a deck of playing cards, a candle and some salt.

Step 1: Turn off all the lights in the room and light the candle.

Step 2: Sprinkle some salt on the playing cards.

Step 3: Each person who is playing the game must shuffle the cards.

Step 4: Lay out the cards, face down, in three groups of six cards. Each group of cards should be 2 columns and three rows, as in the picture above.

Step 5: You ask, “Are the spirits willing to speak with us tonight.”

Step 6: The person who asked the question hovers their hand over each of the cards until you feel heat coming from one of the cards. Oddly enough, you want to select the card with heat radiating from it. It’s weird but the cards do give off heat when doing this. You can feel the heat coming off of them when you hover your hands over them; this is why you much move your hand slowly.

Step 7: Turn over that card. The spirits will communicate through the cards.

             Hearts- Means Yes.
             Spades- Means No.
             Diamonds- Means Maybe.
             Clubs- Means I Don't Know.

Each person who is playing can ask questions. Each time, only the person who asks the question must turn over the card. If anything bad starts to happen, end the game immediately. If you hear whispering or feel something touch you, stop playing.

To end the game, you say, “Goodbye” and blow out the candle. Then you sprinkle salt over the cards again and shuffle them.

Warning: We suggest that you do not play the Card Game.
