o 2 cups shortening
o 2 1/4 cups brown sugar
o 1 quart molasses
o 8 cups flour
o 1 Tbsp. cloves
o 1 tsp. cinnamon
o 1 tsp. ginger
o 1/2 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in 1 tsp. vinegar
Directions:
1. Use a mixture of butter and lard for the shortening.
2. Sift the flour and spices together.
3. Add sugar and mix well.
4. Work in the shortening with the finger tips or with a pastry blender.
5. Add baking soda and molasses and mix thoroughly.
6. Chill.
7. Roll very thin on floured board and cut with fancy cookie cutters.
8. Bake at 350° F about 10 minutes.
